1.2mm Thickness Square Steel Tube

A window fabricator in Ghana standardised on 1.2 mm square tube for a run of shopfront frames and then found that half the sections would not take a self tapping screw without stripping. The wall was right and the grade was right; the problem was that the tube had been quoted in the lightest available wall for that section and the screw was biting into material thinner than the thread pitch. A 1.2 mm wall is a perfectly workable thickness and it covers a lot of light structural work, but it has to be matched to the job. This page sets out what it suits and what we supply.

Why 1.2 mm is a working thickness

At 1.2 mm the tube is easy to handle, easy to cut and weld, and far less prone than thinner material to cracking or losing its edge during bending. That makes it the practical choice for door and window frames, mechanical supports, steel furniture, shelving and fencing, and for the many light load bearing structures where a heavier section would simply add weight and cost without adding anything useful. Made in Q235 or Q345 it holds its shape under the ordinary loads these structures see. Where the tube will be loaded harder, or where fasteners have to bite properly, moving to a heavier wall in the same outside size is usually the cheapest fix, and it avoids redesigning the connections.

Range we supply

Square sections run from 12 x 12 mm to 800 x 800 mm and rectangular sections from 10 x 20 mm to 800 x 1000 mm, with wall thickness from 0.6 mm to 50 mm. Lengths are supplied from 5.8 m to 12 m, ends can be left plain or welded with flanges, and the tube can be oiled or left dry depending on what your process needs. The section shape covers both square and rectangular, so a frame that needs stiffness in one direction and not the other can be built from rectangular material without changing the connection detail. Invoicing can follow theoretical weight or actual weight, whichever your system uses.

Grades and standards

Grades available are Q195, Q345, S235JR, S355JR, S355JOH and S355J2H. The low carbon Q195 grade forms and welds most easily and suits the lightest work. Q345 brings higher yield where the frame is actually loaded. S235JR answers European drawings by their own designation, and the S355 grades serve structural work that has to be certified, with S355J2H being the hollow section grade most European structural specifications call for. Tube is supplied to ASTM A500, EN 10219, EN 10210, JIS and AS 1163 as the order requires. If your drawing names a standard, tell us which one the inspector will read, since the same nominal tube under a different standard is not automatically interchangeable in an approval.

Surface and delivery

Surface treatment covers galvanised with a zinc coating from 30 to 550 g per square metre, bare, oiled or colour painted. The galvanising option matters on outdoor frames, where the coating protects the steel at every cut rather than only where the paint is intact. Delivery is quoted at 22 to 30 days depending on size and quantity, and payment terms are L/C or T/T. On delivery, check that the section is true across the faces and that the wall is uniform, since a thin patch shows up as a screw that will not hold or a weld that blows through. We gauge a sample from each bundle before dispatch and tag every bundle with its heat number.

Questions buyers ask us

Can I get 1.2 mm tube in a heavier wall for the same outside size? Yes, that is a common way to fix a fastener problem without changing the frame design.

Which grade should I pick for a structural frame? Send the span and the load and we will suggest a section and grade. For certified structural work the European S355 grades are usually the ones named.

Can you weld flanges on the ends? Yes, ends can be supplied plain or welded with flanges to your drawing.

Do you cut to length? Yes, send the cut list and we will size before packing.
