Galvanized Iron Square Pipe

A fabricator in Ghana replaced a set of handrails four years in a row before somebody asked why. The first three sets had been made from bare steel tube painted on site, and paint on a coastal job is a maintenance contract you keep paying. Galvanised square pipe is not a more expensive version of the same thing, it is a different answer to the same problem, and the applications where it pays for itself are fairly predictable once you know what to look for.

Why zinc, and how the layer works

Galvanising coats steel or iron with zinc to stop it rusting. The zinc sits on the surface as a barrier, but it also does something paint cannot: where the coating is scratched or cut, the zinc around the damage corrodes preferentially and protects the exposed steel underneath. That is why a galvanised handrail goes on working after a scraped gate has gouged it, and why the finish does not need touching up every season. The protection lasts in proportion to how much zinc is on the surface and how aggressive the surroundings are, which is why coating weight is worth discussing at the enquiry stage rather than leaving to the supplier.

Outdoor work is where it belongs

Weather resistance is the reason most buyers come to galvanised square pipe in the first place. Agricultural irrigation frames, outdoor handrails, fencing, gates and outdoor drainage systems all live in conditions that would have bare steel rusting inside a season. Square pipe is the usual choice for these jobs because it is straightforward to drill, bolt and fabricate flat to flat, and because a square section reads as deliberate structure rather than as plumbing. Coastal sites, wash down areas and stockyards are the most punishing, and they are also where the cost difference between galvanised and painted disappears fastest.

Fire sprinkler and HVAC service

Zinc coating helps protect pipe in fire sprinkler systems, where the tube has to survive heat and remain sound rather than sag or fail during a fire. Square and rectangular galvanised pipe also turns up in HVAC work for duct supports, plant frames and condensate routes, and in water supply and drainage installations where the pipework is exposed or buried in damp ground. In each case the reasoning is the same: the installation is meant to be left alone for a long time, and nobody wants to schedule a repaint into a building services maintenance plan.

Cutting, drilling and joining on site

Galvanised square pipe fabricates much like bare steel, with two practical differences. Cut ends and drilled holes expose steel that has no coating, so on exposed work they should be dressed with a zinc rich repair coating, which we can supply on request. Welding galvanised material produces zinc fume, so the coating needs grinding back roughly 50 mm either side of a joint and the area needs ventilation. Bolt together frames avoid both problems and are the reason much agricultural and fencing work is assembled rather than welded. Where tube will be threaded or coupled, tell us at the quotation stage so the ends can be prepared for it.

How long will it last outdoors? Service life depends on the coating weight and the environment; in a rural or suburban setting a properly coated pipe will outlast a painted one by a wide margin, and in coastal air the gap widens further. Give us the location and we will advise on coating.
