Astm A36 Sheet

The email that opens most A36 sheet enquiries is short: can our welder run it without preheat on a cold morning, and will the mill certificate carry a heat number that traces back to the bundle we open. A36 answers both, which is why it has stayed the default structural sheet in so many drawing packs. Its chemistry is deliberately mild - carbon held low, sulfur and phosphorus kept down - so the sheet shears, forms and welds without the fabricator writing a special procedure for it.

What the grade promises on the shop floor

On a press brake or a plasma table, mild structural sheet behaves the way the estimator assumed it would. It bends at ordinary tooling radii without cracking, welds to other structural steel with common electrodes, and machines without tearing. That predictability is the real product. Fabricators moving down from a high-strength grade usually tell us the surprise is how little they had to change - same electrodes, same cutting settings, same handling gear.

How the sheet leaves the mill

Slab is reheated, rolled down under pressure to the ordered thickness, then cut to length while mill scale is still bonding to the surface. That grey-blue scale is what you see on arrival. It protects the sheet in the yard and is normally removed later by blasting, pickling or painting. Thickness is set at the finishing stand, but we still gauge each lot on receipt at several points across the width, because a sheet that is thin at one edge will show up later as a weld that pulls.

The companion grades we keep beside it

Not every drawing pack says A36. A large share of our sheet tonnage is written in GB grades - Q235, Q255, Q295, Q345 and Q390 for ordinary structural work - and those come off the same hot rolled route. When a customer asks whether Q235 can stand in for A36 on a bracket or a base plate, the honest answer is that the two sit close in strength but the substitution belongs to their engineer. We report the grade on the certificate and leave the equivalence call where it belongs.

Checks before a bundle is strapped

Before a bundle leaves, the inspector records the heat number from the mill certificate against the tag on the bundle, checks width and camber against the packing list, and walks the top sheet for laminations, roll marks or a scale that is flaking off. Bundles are strapped with steel banding and carry a tag that repeats the heat number, so a question raised three weeks later at the receiving end can still be answered without opening every bundle.

Where A36 sheet goes to work

Building structures take most of it - beams, columns, gusset plates and bridge components. Machinery builders use it for frames and base plates that have to be welded, bored and levelled. Infrastructure work takes it in guardrail posts, drainage covers and supports. Surface route is chosen by the buyer: as-rolled scale, blasted to a paint grade, or galvanized when the steel will sit outdoors.

Questions we answer most weeks

Can it be galvanized after fabrication? Yes. Low carbon and controlled sulfur are exactly what keeps a hot dip bath from turning brittle at the weld toes, which is why this grade survives galvanizing better than most.

What paperwork travels with a container? Mill test certificate with heat numbers, packing list, and third party inspection when the buyer nominates one. If your customs broker needs a certificate of origin, tell us before the container is sealed.
