DX51D Galvanized Steel GI Coils

Two DX51D coils can stand side by side in a yard and look identical in a photograph, then behave quite differently under a paint line. The difference is usually the spangle, and spangle is a process variable rather than a quality grade. On galvanised coil the crystal pattern formed as the zinc solidified may be large and evenly distributed, fine and dense, or suppressed altogether under special process control, and each of those surfaces covers differently when paint is applied over it.

How the zinc layer is formed

Galvanised coil is steel coil that has received a surface zinc treatment, and the purpose is straightforward: keep the steel out of contact with the environment it works in. The hot dip route passes the strip through molten zinc, and the coating that forms is what carries the corrosion duty for the whole component. That is why coating quality is judged on evenness and continuity rather than on thickness alone - a heavy but patchy layer protects less well than a lighter, unbroken one.

What the coating buys

Anti-corrosion performance is the first reason the material is bought, and it holds up in humidity and in industrial atmospheres where bare steel would not survive long. Processing performance is the second: the coating and the low carbon substrate together allow stamping and bending into the shapes a factory needs, and welding joins the material without a special procedure. The surface is smooth and bright enough to be decorative, and it resists discolouration, so a component can be left unpainted where appearance allows. The production route is also energy efficient by comparison with heavier coating processes, and the extended life of the finished part means fewer replacements.

Spangle types and where each is chosen

Ordinary spangle is the most common, with a larger crystal shape and a fairly even distribution. Fine spangle is smaller and more densely set. Zinc free product is hot dip galvanised coil with almost no visible spangle, produced under tight process control, and there are also special shaped patterns for particular appearances. Where the coil will be painted, the finer and less pronounced surfaces are usually the easier starting point; where the sheet stays visible and unpainted, the ordinary spangle is part of the look rather than a defect.

Construction, automotive manufacturing and home appliances take the bulk of this material, where it appears as colour coated steel plate, water pipe and car casings among many other parts. Send the thickness, the width, the coil inner diameter and weight, the spangle requirement and the surface treatment, and mention whether the coil will be painted afterwards. With those points fixed the coil can be made to the application rather than to a general description. Coil build matters as much as the coating here: the inner diameter and coil weight decide whether the customer's line can run the coil, or has to re-coil it first.
