A duct shop judges galvanised coil by what it does on its own machines. The strip has to run through the coil former, take a laser cut without the coating lifting at the kerf, punch cleanly, and bend to a tight radius without the zinc flaking at the fold. DX51D galvanised sheet is bought for exactly that reason: a uniform zinc layer over a low carbon substrate that behaves the same way on all four operations.

The hot dip line, step by step
DX51D zinc coated sheet is produced by running low carbon steel through a continuous hot dip galvanising line. The sequence is alkaline washing, drying, reduction, galvanising and cooling, with coiling, further alkaline washing, oil sealing passivation, cooling, annealing and rewinding completing the route. The alkaline wash and the reduction stage are what let the zinc bond rather than merely sit on the surface, and the passivation step is what protects the fresh coating from white rust before it reaches the customer's yard. Coil weight and inner diameter are agreed at the same stage, so the customer's mandrel and uncoiler are matched before the coil is shipped.

What the quality checks cover
Six indicators are checked on this product: chemical composition, thickness, bending, hardness, metallography and intergranular corrosion. Read as a list, it maps where things go wrong. Composition decides weldability and forming behaviour. Thickness decides whether the part matches the drawing. Bending and hardness decide whether the coating survives the fold. Metallography and intergranular corrosion catch the structural problems that only surface months into service, long after the coil has been cut up. The checks run on standardised equipment and procedures rather than on a visual pass at the end of the line.
Where the sheet goes
Building roof panels and wall cladding take the largest share, with air conditioning ducts close behind. Appliance back panels, chassis and cabinets, storage cabinets and agricultural machinery account for the rest. In humid and outdoor conditions the dense, stable zinc film is what gives the substrate its long term protection, and because the coating is applied uniformly, the inside face of a duct looks the same as the outside. Duct makers also watch how the coating behaves at a lock seam, since a duct is joined by folding rather than by welding and the fold has to close without splitting the zinc.

Packing and what to put in the enquiry
Sheets are packed with waxed paper and VCI-coated cardboard, which is what keeps a galvanised surface from taking on moisture in transit. A single sheet weighing under one tonne is bundled with two to four steel straps and fitted with wooden pads, steel buckles and barcode markings, so a bundle can be identified and traced without being opened. Heavier bundles are handled individually rather than by the bundle, which keeps the coated edges clear of the lifting slings. Tell us the thickness, the width, the sheet or coil size, and the atmosphere the finished part will face, and the offer will state the coating class together with the delivery schedule.
