Metal Spiral Pipe

A piling contractor in Southeast Asia was splicing 12 metre spiral pipe into 36 metre piles on site, three welds per pile, in ground that flooded as fast as the crew could dewater it. Switching to a mill that could supply longer lengths cut the splices and the schedule. How metal spiral pipe is made

The process starts with steel coil, typically carbon steel, low alloy steel or stainless steel depending on the service, which is uncoiled and fed into a forming machine. The strip is bent into a spiral, with the forming angle controlling the diameter and the pitch of the finished pipe. The edges are then joined by submerged arc welding, carried out automatically with a double wire, double sided arrangement. Submerged arc welding covers the arc with flux, which keeps the molten metal clean and produces a uniform weld with good penetration, and doing it from both sides means the seam is fully fused through the wall rather than only on the outside. The result is a pipe with a consistent seam and a body whose diameter is controlled throughout its length.

Materials and sizes

We roll carbon steel, low alloy steel and stainless steel coil for this product, with the choice driven by the medium being carried and the environment the pipe will sit in. Carbon and low alloy material covers water, gas, oil and heating service, where the pipe carries fluid at modest pressure and the main enemy is corrosion. Stainless is chosen where the medium is aggressive or where the installation has to remain clean, such as certain process and water treatment duties. Because the pipe is formed from strip, the diameter and wall can be matched to what the job actually needs rather than being limited to a catalogue, and lengths can be produced well beyond what a straight seam mill can offer. Where it is used

Foundation work is the biggest single use, where spiral pipe serves as piling and foundation tube for buildings, bridges and marine structures. Water conservancy projects use it for mains, culverts and outfalls. Natural gas and petroleum lines use it for gathering and transfer duty. District heating uses it for the mains that carry hot water through a city, where the pipe has to survive decades underground. In all of these, the reason the same product gets specified is the combination of large diameter, long lengths and a fully fused seam, which together reduce the number of joints the field crew has to make and inspect.

Why welding quality matters more than it looks

On a buried main or a pile, the seam is the part nobody can inspect once the installation is complete. A double sided submerged arc weld gives full penetration through the wall, which means the seam is not relying on the outside surface alone to hold pressure or to resist corrosion from the inside. On heating mains and water lines the inside of the pipe is wet for its whole life, so a seam that is only fused on one side is a seam that will eventually open from within. That is the practical reason this product is specified by welding process rather than only by dimensions, and why we confirm the weld arrangement before quoting a pressure duty.
