A36 Flat Bar

A fabricator's take-off often lands as one line: A36 flat bar, 100 x 10 mm, 240 lengths, connection material. Nothing about strength class, nothing about finish. The grade name is doing quiet work there - it tells the shop the bar will weld to the beams without a procedure, punch cleanly for the bolt holes, and take a galvanized finish without the embrittlement argument that comes with higher-carbon steels. What the line does not say is where the bar comes from, which is where most of the project risk actually sits.

Grades that swap cleanly for A36

We supply A36 alongside S235JR, S355JR, ST37-2, SS400, Q235, Q195 and Q345. On connection plates and cleats, the first three appear most often on European drawings; SS400 and Q235 turn up on Asian packages. They are not identical, and we will not tell you they are - yield levels and chemistry windows differ. What we can do is state exactly which grade is on the bundle and what the certificate shows, so your engineer can sign the substitution instead of guessing at it.

Lengths and processing

Length runs from 1 m to 12 m, or cut to your list, and the processing services on offer are bending, welding, uncoiling, punching and cutting. In practice most orders use two of them: cut to a part schedule, then punched or drilled to the connection layout. Sending the layout with the order saves a shop drawing round, because we punch from your coordinates rather than from a stock pattern.

The standards the bar is checked against

Depending on the order, the bar is produced and inspected against AISI, ASTM, BS, DIN or JIS. The useful part for a buyer is not the list but the match: if your project spec calls up a standard for connection steel, tell us at enquiry stage and we will confirm the supply route before quoting, not after the material is on the water.

Testing before dispatch

Quality inspection covers physical performance testing rather than a visual pass, and certificates travel with the shipment. Delivery on standard sizes runs about 5 to 10 days from confirmation, which is quick enough that most projects do not need a stock buffer, but slow enough that a spring order should be placed before the drawing freeze rather than after.

Where the bar goes

Office building frames take the bulk of it as connection material, bracing and base plates. Equipment and machinery work uses it for brackets and supports. Decorative and architectural metalwork uses the same section with a different finish. The application does not change the grade conversation very much - corrosion, welding and bolt loads do that.

Questions from the estimator

Do you supply mill certificates per heat? Yes, and the certificate numbers repeat on the bundle tags so receiving can match them without opening the stack.

What is your minimum for a punched order? Punching is quoted per order rather than per tonnage, so small lots are practical. Send the layout and we will price it against plain cut lengths so you can see the difference.
