It can produce pipes with larger diameters using narrower billets, and can also produce pipes with different diameters using billets of the same width. However, compared with straight seam pipes of the same length, the weld length of spiral welded pipes increases by 30% to 100%, and the production speed is lower. Therefore, most small-diameter welded pipes adopt straight seam welding, while most large-diameter welded pipes adopt spiral welding.

SY/T5037-2018 (a ministry-enforced standard, also known as ordinary fluid transportation pipeline spiral seam submerged arc welded steel pipe), GB/T9711.1-1997 (a national standard, also known as technical conditions for delivery of steel pipes for oil and gas industry pipelines, Part 1: Requirements for Grade A steel pipes) and Grade B steel pipes, API-5L (American Petroleum Institute, also known as pipeline steel pipes); among which there are two levels: PSL1 and PSL2; SY/T5040-92 (standard for pile spiral seam submerged arc welded steel pipe).
