Equal Angle Bar

Frame structures are honest about their steel: every connection point wants a right angle, and equal angle bar is the section that arrives as one. Two legs of identical length meeting at ninety degrees - that is the whole product, and the order book behind it is a size table. Reading that table correctly is where the money is, so this page walks through the sizes and weights the way a fabricator actually uses them.

What equal angle means on the drawing

Equal angle steel, also called equilateral angle, carries both legs at the same length with a ninety-degree angle between them. The L-shaped cross-section is what makes it the default for frame structures, support structures and mechanical components: one leg bolts to the main member, the other carries the attachment, and the section between them provides the stiffness neither plate alone would give.

The size table, translated

The fast-moving sections run like this: 20×3 mm weighs 0.885 kg per meter; 25×3 mm comes in at 1.122 kg/m and its thicker 25×4 sibling at 1.459 kg/m; 30×3 mm runs 1.373 kg/m and 30×4 mm 1.786 kg/m; the 40 mm family spans 1.852 kg/m at 3 mm thickness, 2.422 kg/m at 4 mm and 2.976 kg/m at 5 mm; and the 50 mm pair - 50×4 and 50×5 - close the common list at 3.059 and 3.770 kg/m. Those weights are how tonnage gets estimated from a drawing: count the meters, multiply, add the cutting waste.

Where each size earns its keep

The light end - 20 and 25 mm - serves brackets, frames for equipment and light support work. The 30 and 40 mm sections carry general construction bracing, racks and mechanical frames. The 50 mm pair is where structural connections and heavier support structures begin. Stepping one thickness up within the same leg length is the cheapest strength upgrade in structural steel, which is why the 3/4/5 mm ladder exists on every leg size.

Manufacture and consistency

Equal angle is hot rolled from bloom to finished L-section, which locks the angle at ninety degrees and the two legs at equal length in the same pass. That process-level consistency is what makes connections assemble without shimming - the practical difference between angle from a proper mill and angle from a re-roller's leftovers shows up the first day on site.

Checks before dispatch

Leg lengths, thickness and squareness of the angle are measured at both ends of the bundle, straightness is checked over full lengths, and weight per meter is verified against the theoretical values in the table - the check that catches under-thickness material before it becomes a site dispute.

Which size for a rack frame? 40×4 or 40×5 covers most medium rack duty; the leg carries the connection, the thickness carries the load.

Can lengths be cut to schedule? Yes - cut-to-length ordering removes the offcut pile and the second handling.
