Types Of Steel Sections

Apr 24, 2025

Steel sections are strip-shaped steel with specific cross-sectional shapes and sizes, which are widely used in fields such as construction, engineering, and machinery manufacturing. According to their cross-sectional shapes and uses, steel sections can be divided into the following categories:

1. Simple cross-sectional steel sections
The cross-sectional shapes of simple cross-sectional steel sections are relatively simple, mainly including the following types:

Square steel: The cross-section is square, and the specifications are expressed by side length. It is often used in building structures and machinery manufacturing.
Round steel: The cross-section is circular, and the specifications are expressed by diameter. Small diameter round steel is often used as building steel bars.
Flat steel: The cross-section is rectangular, and the specifications are expressed by width and thickness. It is suitable for construction and machinery processing.
Angle steel: The cross-section is L-shaped, divided into equal angle steel and unequal angle steel, and is often used as a connector for steel structures.
Hexagonal steel: The cross-section is a regular hexagon, mainly used in the manufacture of mechanical parts.

2. Complex section steel
The cross-sectional shape of complex section steel is relatively complex, mainly including the following types:

I-beam: The cross-section is I-shaped, mainly used for beams and load-bearing structures, divided into standard I-beams, light I-beams and wide-leg I-beams.
Channel steel: The cross-section is channel-shaped, suitable for the base steel frame of components with large self-weight, such as dry hanging stone and bathroom partition walls.
H-shaped steel: The cross-section is H-shaped, with wide flanges and uniform thickness, good torsion resistance, and is often used for structural load-bearing columns and floor slabs.
Steel rail: Used for railways and crane tracks, the specifications are expressed in weight per meter.
Window frame steel: Used for building door and window frames, with a specific cross-sectional shape.

3. Other classification methods
Classification by size: Steel can be divided into large steel, medium steel and small steel, which are suitable for different engineering needs.
Classification by production method: Including hot-rolled steel and welded steel, hot-rolled steel has excellent mechanical properties.
Classification by purpose: Such as H-shaped steel beams, H-shaped steel columns, H-shaped steel piles, etc., suitable for different structural parts.
Summary: There are many types of steel sections, which can meet various engineering and construction needs according to the different cross-sectional shapes, sizes and uses. Choosing the right type of steel section is crucial to ensure the stability and safety of the structure.
