304 Stainless Steel Sheet Metal

Put a micrometer on a sheet of 304 and the number printed on the tag is only half the answer. What decides whether a laser cuts cleanly is how far the gauge drifts between one end of the sheet and the other, and from sheet to sheet inside the same pallet. A spread of a few hundredths of a millimetre is enough to send focal height hunting and leave a burr on every edge.

We hold plus or minus 1% on thickness for cold rolled 304 and measure it before packing rather than trusting the mill schedule to have held. That one habit removes most of the surprises that surface at the cutting table.

How the three mill routes differ

304 sheet reaches us from three directions. Cold rolled material leaves the rolls at room temperature, which is what gives thin gauges their flat surface and tight dimensional control. Hot rolled plate is the honest choice when thickness and load matter more than finish. Rerolled stock lets us hit intermediate gauges without forcing a buyer to jump between two catalogue sizes. Each route trades surface, flatness and price differently, and the right pick depends on what happens to the sheet after it leaves your rack.

Thickness, width, and where the band gets checked

The working range runs from 0.01 mm up to 3.0 mm, with custom thicknesses made to order, and width from 10 mm to 1500 mm, also made to order. That covers narrow slit stock for stamping lines as well as full-width sheets for panel work. Thickness is spot-checked at quarter points across the sheet and at both edges, because a coil that is good at the centre and thin at the edge passes a one-point check and then fails on the press. Slit edges are checked for burrs, which matter far more at 0.5 mm than they do at 2 mm.

Grades, and the one decision most buyers actually make

The family we handle spans 200, 300 and 400 series, produced against GB, AISI, ASTM, ASME, EN, BS, DIN and JIS. In practice almost every enquiry lands on the same fork: 304 for general service, 316 where chlorides are part of the environment. Salt air, cleaning chemicals and process water push the decision toward 316; indoor fabrication rarely justifies the premium. Tell us where the sheet will live and we will say plainly which grade you need.

Mill test certificates travel with every batch, listing chemistry and mechanical results tied to the heat number, so incoming inspection has something real to check against.

Where thin 304 sheet ends up

Signage, kitchen equipment, elevator interiors, cabinet and appliance panels, food-contact surfaces and architectural trim. It forms and welds cleanly at room temperature, needs no coating to stay presentable, and wipes down. Buyers who need strength at low weight like that thin plates still carry useful load, which is why the same gauge turns up in high-temperature and fire-rated assemblies.

If you need a specific width to suit a feeder or a press bed, say so with the order. We slit before packing rather than leaving you to trim it on site.

Thickness, width, length, quantity and destination port are enough to quote; a sentence about the working environment settles the grade.
